GARAGE sale madness and catching back up!

Wednesday, May 9, 2012
Where to begin.  So yes it has been a while (okay six days… waaayyyy overdue) but better late than never.

SO – I need to start off with the weekend.  THE GARAGE SALE.  So – in my post on pre-genetically defined bargain hunting – its in your blood (read here for background info); basically I proposed the theory that bargain hunting is a genetic mutation; it is passed down in your blood and is something you have no control over – like red hair or freckles.  My Dad is the biggest bargain hunter I know; his poison of choice is garage sales.  So when my Finnish grandparents decided they were having a garage sale to clear out almost their entire worldly possessions (they are moving to a unit in town; as opposed to the 40 acre farm they currently live on.  Wise move), as you could imagine Dad was the first  to jump up screaming that he would assist.  And then he roped me into it.

So there I was, 7:45am Saturday morning, just having travelled the 45min drive to my Mummu and Pappas house smack bang in the middle of nowhere, regional Victoria – all ready for the garage sale.  PUMPED I was.  Well not – but trying to be.  Was hard to muster up much enthusiasm when it was six degrees and I was yet to have a coffee.  Upon arrival – Dad is out doing some merchandising.  I brought along two awful tribal-inspired vases that I had planned to give to the op shop but though I would see if I could make a quick buck instead; and a three door Balinese inspired mini chest.  Now this mini chest is a bit of an in-joke;  like everything else I furnish my house from eBay finds, and  I spotted this chest of drawers a while back (Balinese phase has long past thank god).   Made the bf go and pick it up in his ute., as I did not assume they would fit in my micro Citroen.  Turns out he could have gone and picked them up on a skateboard; it only just comes up to your knee and the drawers are so tiny that nothing of any major importance could possibly fit in them.  Hence – mini chest.  Totally crap and pointless – but hopefully someone will hand over a tenner for it.

Dad was a little ‘embarrassed’ with the calibre of items for sale; being a seasoned garage-saler he was worried that any of the customers that were keen enough to actually make the trek out to this sale of the century were going to walk away in disgust.  TV remote with the power button chewed off by Rosie the galah? Here – 20 cents.   Full set of Finnish encyclopaedias from 1967? Got it - $10.  55 year old metal detector which actually does still work – interested… $350 (um I pulled this price tag off immediately – NOT GOING TO HAPPEN).  My Mummu had really put in the hard yards – every single item (from a container full of corks and bottle tops to every single knick knack and old Tupperware that covered the trestle tables) was priced.  INDIVIDUALLY priced – with a small white handwritten sticker.  Unbelievable.  She has even priced all items in the house (except for my Pappa – whose favourite joke with all customers then became ‘I am not for sale’ in a thick Finnish accent followed with raucous laughter), and invited people through to examine the wares. Amazing.
One hour on – the garage sale was in full swing.  The amount of customers who made the trip was simply amazing; farmers, families with dogs and kids in tow and even groups of teenagers and young couples – looking for a retro bargain or two.  Three cups of black International roast later – my Dad and I had our selling pants on and things were flying out the door.  Dad had the brilliant idea of pilling all the rusted antique tools, nuts and bolts into icecream containers, all priced at $2 a container.  The farmer men were enthralled with the most random bits of rusted metal, and you couldn’t drag them away from half a bit of broken pipe or some secateurs so covered in rust they didn’t even open – these were absolute gold to them.  We began pulling everything out of the house that we could carry – and did some much needed re-merchandising, and sales took off.   Fishing nets (now illegal ones) were racing out, as well as ancient rugs, 80’s pastel swan prints and a rather stunning embroidered donkey tapestry that even Mummu thought was hideous.  We sold a dining table, a hand crafted chair swing and three rocking chairs.  Two radios and one clock that didn’t work, a rusted out bike for the bargain price of $1 and a boxload of quinces (kindly donated by a lady by Mummu goes to line-dancing with – wht do you even do with these?).  But perhaps the sale of the day was the dilapidated vintage caravan.  It was parked in the trees, had two flat tyres and the painted cladding was peeling and falling off in places – but some lucky customer walked away with it for the absolute bargain price of $20.  How they were coming to pick it up – I have no idea.

Overall – it was a raging success.  We made just under $400 – until dad found a two bucker in his pocket which meant we cleared the four hundred mark.  FAB.

Here are some action shots of the fun filled day:

the CARAVAN!

the caravan interior - amazing

A record player I snapped up for the bf - he has been hunting for one for a while
Hahaha. GOLD.
Hmm.. what else?  The remainder of the weekend was uneventful – did some baking.  I am into sugar-free everything at the moment (like fashion, my diet is heavily influenced by any diet/lifestyle/health book or mag or even story watched on A Current Affair – last one was no dairy (if I see another soy yogurt I will SCREAM); so attempted to create a sugar-free cheesecake and thought I’d through in a berry and rhubarb slice whilst I was at it.  Well – I am not a baker; a point further proven by these two disastrous efforts.  The slice was so bland and uninspiring the word cardboard springs immediately to mind (I tried to pretend I liked it but the bf was sceptical – and rightly so.  BLEUGH), and then the cheesecake. OH the cheesecake.  I couldn’t get the creamcheese to blend in properly – so I (wrongly) figured that it would somehow melt in in the oven and become a wonderfully smooth consistency.  Alas – it did not.  The top remained lumpy, but at least was firm.   Lumps of cream cheese may end up being quite tasty I surmised – and so I put it in the fridge to cool.  After dinner, and with much anticipation I cut the first slice, and it went everywhere.  The middle was still runny, and the pasty was nowhere near cooked.  I mashed it up in a bowl with some cream and tried to pass it off as ‘cheesecake crumble and cream’ – but even the bf wouldn’t eat it.  God damn – in the bin for that guy too.  $60 and a full bin later – think I am ready to give up any masterchef fantasies.

Monday’s outfit was crap – no images are required.  I had a sore toe and wore horrid flat shoes that in no way matched the outfit; the whole experience put a dampener on the day and I could not bring myself to post.
Tuesday’s outfit was awesome.  Yesterday was a Melbourne day – so that means I can go a little bit more ‘fashiony’ than usual; plus I was meeting a gf for dinner so needed to impress.  This was it:

Outfit included a new addition to the wardrobe room – orange linen high-waisted Gorman pants ($25 eBay – fab colour and loving the high waisted fit), with the Sussan navy and cream striped shirt tucked in ($30 on sale Sussan), and then the CR colour block espadrilles as footwear (the peach heel matched totally with the pants and it was going to be a gorgeous 22 degrees in Melb town – hence the toes out).  I had added a cream Zara boyfriend blazer for the morning chill – this added a total seventies vibe to the outfit – not sure if I liked this or not.
Dinner plans fell through – which actually suited me fine as it meant I squeezed in a spot of South Wharf DFO shopping (and I got to watch the entire Biggest Loser finale – the girls looked amazing!).  In 1.5 hours I visited three shops – and with change from $200 I came out with the below:

Country Road – 1x pair of rust coloured rayon drape front pants ($40); and 1x pair of tan clog heeled boots ($30 – I know these are not cool anymore but they were THIRTY BUCKS – I just couldn’t pass them up.  They will still be cool in Ballarat so all good) and a sleeveless silk black and latte panelled shirt ($60 – just because I needed another sleeveless silk shirt).
Witchery – 1x pair black glitter brogues ($47.50 – super cute, and so reasonable)
The other shop visited was Bed Bath and Table where I bought some matching Morgan and Finch eurpoean pillowshams – OH how exciting. No pics of these babies.
Todays outfit:

This includes the CR pants bought yesterday, with a Sportsgirl tomato red sleeveless shirt tucked in and a black Tibi jacket thrown over the top.  I did have the sparkly new brogues paired with this – but when I put it all together I felt like Ellen Degeneres and not in a good way.  Quickly changed these for some Sempre Di black leather sandals and the overall effect was much more visually pleasing.

Delivery today:
One is a secret (could it be competition related??!) and the other is Possible Wedding Dress option number three.  Will need to secretly try when I get home – hopefully this one will be a winner!
Here it is again:

Then all I need is to get engaged.  One step at a time… at least ill have the dress sorted first.
OH – the Latopic blazer has arrived at Mother dearests.  I am allowed an early birthday present this weekend – it’s a toss up between an oversized camel Gorman coat or the amazing sequin Latopic Ricki-Lee blazer.  Decisions decisions, may try to make mum give up both.  There is still a Rachel Gilbert leather jacket to come….

GUESS WHO BOUGHT THE BLAZER??

Thursday, May 3, 2012
So seems yesterday’s post re: the TOTALLY AMAZING Latopic blazer as worn by Ricki Lee on the Voice has spiralled; was shared on the designers FB page (see them here) and that post alone has now clocked up the second highest views ever for the blog (Vicky Pattison’s yellow dress is still up there as number one – seriously. It is bizarre).  Having been on the phone with the Birdcage Boutique in Adelaide (fb page here); well, actually my mother has been on the phone with them as I cannot call and hunt down gold sequin blazers whilst in the open plan office without looking a little bit suspect.  THANKS MOTHER – you are the greatest);  anyway – the Love Is sequin blazer from Latopic is getting posted over to me AS WE SPEAK.  So excited beyond words. And for only $199 – an absolute steal.  LOVE it. Call the team – they are lovely x

BUT – and this is not the most exciting part of the story; last night whilst couch sitting and block watching, my phone twitted.  It read - @TheRickiLee IS NOW FOLLOWING YOU ON TWITTER.  Me.  Following ME.  Being a fairly new and woefully inexperienced Twitter user I have amassed an enormous following of 47 tweeps – an number I was quite excited about.  But now, that number has skyrocketed to 48 with the addition on Miss RL herself.. word must have spread to her about that jacket post!  Fab.  She has 37500 followers, and I have 48.  What a match.  Now we can also be twins in our matching Latopic jackets.  Bet she is super excited at that prospect.

Here it is again for your viewing pleasure.

 OOOOOOOH.

In other nowhere near as exciting news, our hot water service called it quits sometime in the middle of the night.  Great.  Perfect timing really, as today was the coldest morning Ballarat has experienced this year so far.  Awesome – who doesn’t wish for a cold shower when it is 2 degrees and frosty outside.  NOT ME – that is who.  Horrible.   This was then followed by breakfast with alarming amounts of condensation on each breath, and a car that really didn’t want to start. WAH.

At least I have the most amazing blazer ever to brighten my day.

Moving on to today’s outfit.  Here.

Today I am wearing things that I bought or were delivered to me yesterday – so this outfit would not have been possible yesterday morning.  That is what I love about getting eBay deliveries just about every day – your wardrobe is constantly changing and something new and amazing comes along and how could you have ever lived without this before and then oh I am sick of that so Ill sell it to make cash and room for something new and amazing and the whole cycle starts again.  Life wasn’t mean to be dull findettes; and this translates over to your wardrobe.

SO today I am wearing a Navy and Cream striped shirt (NEW - $30 in store on sale Sussans.  As Sussans is the only decent shop in the glory that is the local Plaza, I often pop in to do a bit of retail therapy.  Found this little beauty yesterday; who doesn’t love a stripe and at that price it was definitely coming home with me), which is worn under the Zara star print blazer ($45 eBay – okay so I have had this one for a while but loving the stars and stripes mashup).  These are worn over the BRAND NEW Sass and Bide Husley Straits that were delivered to me yesterday ($35 eBay.  This is the punt that played off – they are super hot and fit perfectly, and they are a little bit cropped and love the small kick out they do at the bottom hem. FAB); and finally the Trenery tan spliced wedges which also arrived yesterday ($50 Ebay – fit perfect, heel height means I can run all day (which I do heaps of here at my desk) and the colours are so neutral and match in with everything).  And that is it!

DELIVERY:
Got the Sole Society tan woven leather clogs ($25 eBay), and the three CR tops I paid too much for.

Today is a great day!

fashion FOUND Ricki-Lee's blazer and 10,000 big ones

Wednesday, May 2, 2012
WOOOOP. Just clocked over 10,000 views.. FABulous. Milestone effort - majorly excited.  Thank you all SO MUCH for reading - love love LOVE it.  You are all amazing x

Now just an update on the gold blazer as worn by Miss Ricki-Lee on the Voice last night.  Fashion FOUND:

TADA:

So this amazing blazer is from upcoming Australian label Latopic, from their Winter 2012 'Fueling the fire' collection (view the collection here - some AMAZING pieces, what a find).  It is called their 'Love is Sequin Blazer' - and is gold and sequinned and fabulous; what else could you ask for in a blazer?  I am trying to find a web stockist; they dont have an online store but do have a real-life store stockist list here.   I have facebooked them and will hopefully get a response soon.

LOVE IT.

SO I think 10,000 views calls for a giveaway.... STAY TUNED.

(No it wont be this jacket!)

the world according to Alexander Wang and bridal shopping?

So I was perusing ebayland last night *surprise surprise I  know* and mentally composed an outfit constructed entirely of Alexander Wang garments.

Here:
TOP – Alexander Wang lemongrass knit jumper.  Current bid $200.

PANTS – Alexander Wang mocha cropped pants.  Buy it now $125.

JACKET - Alexander Wang Zippered wool and cashmere coat.  Buy it Now $550.

SHOES – Alexander Wang ‘Nastasha’ leopard print heels. Current bid $390.

BAG – Alexander Wang ‘Kristen’ multi strap bag. Current bid $163.49.

TOTAL COST for maximum  Alexander Wangeriffic action = $1428.49.

The bag alone is $850.. so there is a massive saving to be had here ladies.  LOVE that lemongrass jumper (making me feel like thai food) and how it matches in with the POP of yellow on the sleeves of the coat.  And those shoes are TDF.  Maybe I just need the shoes and jumper.. but then how can I not get the matching coat?  And then those pants are so cheap as well…

SO I was on eBay last night as all of my items were ending.  Sold 10 out of 13 items… not a bad result; rake in just under $800.  Not bad for items I had lying around; feeling unused and unwanted.  They are now off to good homes, where they will be loved and appreciated just like they deserve.  How lovely.

What to do with all this cash is the next question?!

WELL – its actually pretty much all gone.  3 items ended early with buy it now options.. and that is what has paid for the last few purchases and a must have delivery of moisturiser and L’Occitane shampoo and conditioner from Strawberry net.  And then, straight after all my items ended last night I snapped up this.  It was 12:47 am and I was bargaining with a lovely girl on the other side of the country.. to buy THIS:

A Carla Zampatti goddess dress.  Yes, it is a potential wedding dress.  No I am not engaged.  I am simply pre-planning to ensure when the time comes I am fully prepared just in case it is a shotgun wedding down at the local registry.  Okay so that is definitely not going to be the case, but really I just saw it and knew it would be perfect for when the time comes.  And yes - I bought it online.  OFF EBAY.  I know this will feak some people out - but really would you expect any less? This, I must add, is not actually the first *potential wedding dress* I have bought online.  This is currently number three.  The problem with buying them so far in advance is that I tend to get sick of them quite quickly, and then find something else I much prefer.   And being such a sucker for a bargain, I cannot pass up the opportunity when an amazing dress presents itself at an amazing price – I MUST buy.

I know I am weird.  But hey.  Hopefully there will be a ring on it shortly – as I really don’t want to get sick of this one just yet.

Today’s outfit.

Today I have gone for a bold red, black and animal print combo, which definitely packs  a punch.  Today includes Sass and Bide leopard print silk blazer ($75 eBay – just don’t wear this enough.  It is totally hot and works so well with colour clashing and mixing prints), worn over a tomato red rayon tee from Sussan ($35 on sale Sussan – fab colour and such an easy to wear shape.  There is an electric blue version in store still, perhaps I should also snap that bad boy up) – love the clash between the two colours.  All worn over the Neon Blonde black shiny jeggings and some fab Hoss tan suede ankle boots.  Then decided a big fat NO to the boots and added the new Tony Bianco black peep toe leather wedges instead – just to add a bit of smart business casual to the look.  Done.

Delivery alert:

What are these?? Uh just open them and see.
SO we have the spliced tan Trenery wedges (fab) and the risk-taking Sass and Bide shiny jeans…. Which are THE RIGHT ONES! Awesome – love it when you take a punt and it pays off (as admittedly I have an entire wardrobe of risky items which have most certainly NOT paid off).  YAY.  Watch out for tomorrow.. already building amazing outfits in my head....
Looks like it’s going to be a great day.  I love clothes.

the joy of ironing, Ricki Lee and todays outfit

Tuesday, May 1, 2012
Last night was super exciting.  And I am being serious.  Last night – I IRONED.

So the actual process of ironing is not the exciting part; in all honesty I think ironing is just as much fun as going and getting a wax.  But, just as waxing is a necessity so too is being up to date with your ironing basket.  This was mine before I started.

OH. Not fun.

But – the thing with ironing is that it’s benefits most certainly outweigh the physical act of completing the task.  YES it is tedious and boring and god who can be bothered ironing shirts BUT my wardrobe literally doubles after a good bout of ironing.. it is like I received a whole new bunch of parcels in the mail as there are items in there that I haven’t seen in weeks.   Electric blue Saba cropped pants? Found!  Mustard longline Witchery shirt? OH that’s where you have been hiding.  It is simply amazing.  Anyone who knows my wardrobe can tell when an ironing frenzy has taken place, as all of a sudden my wardrobe selection is once again interesting and inspired, and there is a definite spring in my step.  Here is my basket after last night’s mammoth efforts:

Okay so I know it is still rather full (but it is at least all folded much more neatly than before) but the items in there will not be getting a look in anytime soon.  Remaining are silk maxi dresses, a linen sundress or two and quite a few items I probably won’t ever wear again but cannot yet bring myself to get rid of (embroidered Jen’s Pirate Booty boho shirt I am talking about you!).

Here is the high quality Freedom rack (if further clarification is required on the elements which make up the wardrobe room please see post entitled 'Wardrobe room ATTACKS' - very helpful in deciphering what on earth I am referring to) filled to the brim with amazingly crease-free items just waiting to be styled and worn:

FAB.

I like to think of myself as the multi-tasking queen – who can iron and watch the Voice simultaneously.  Needless to say I was horrified with Joel’s terrible decision to send Mathalia Barnes home (the Voice became the Legs – I shan’t be watching anymore); which then gave me flashbacks to ANOTHER horrible moment in Australian musical-related reailty television when Ricki Lee was kicked off Idol (once again I revolted by not watching the show for a whole two weeks).  And, speaking of Miss Coulter – hasn’t she come a long way from her Idol days.  Who doesn’t love a good makeover, and that girl is looking amazing at the moment.  Here are some before and after shots just to prove my point:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Hot.  Plus I was totally loving her gold sequin blazer that she wore on the show last night – fashion find alert. I will hunt you down.

Okay – today’s outfit.

Thanks once again to the ironing frenzy – I found this long lost Witchery mustard draped rayon longline shirt ($35 in store Witchery on sale) – had been missing from the wardrobe rotation for about three weeks now.  LOVE the shape of this baby; it is such an easy wear in this fabric and the colour is perfect for Autumn.  I cinched it in with a Sportsgirl mixed tan skinny belt ($20 in store Sportsgirl), just to liven things up a bit.  The above is worn over some Bettina Liano Ace black canvas pants  ($50 eBay), and then finished off with the AHmazing $1.67 vintage tan clogs. TA DA.  No coat – the weather is a little bit more on the friendly side today.

No deliveries as yet – but as there are quite a few outstanding items I presume the postman will be laden with goodies in this afternoon’s mail drop.  OH MR POSTMAN….

OH this Natasha leather jacket is ending on eBay in halfa... its $50 no bids.

SHOULD I BID? Do I want/need/must have/require/covet/have space for this? I do have a penchant for leather jackets...

OH Probably not.  It is cute though....
