spontaneous clothing combustion - WTF?

Wednesday, April 11, 2012
So (now just how many blog posts do I start with the word SO? Checking back down the list it seems like it is probably around 90% of them.  Its not like I begin real life conversations this way; I don’t just walk up to a group of people and interrupt with a rather loud SO.  Usually my opener of choice would be something along the lines of Hello, Hi or even Hey.  A few blogs I know start off with super friendly greetings of Hello Lovelies or even Hi Precious Readers. Just a little to perky for me.  I am still trying to wake up.  I guess I am just not that sort of girl).

Anyway – back to so.  SO on Sunday the temperature here in sunny regional Victoria reached a maximum of 12 degrees, and I was camped out infront of the heater for most of the day.  At one point I did get the need to venture out to the supermarket for the weekly shop, and put on my trusty Rebecca Taylor faux fur vest that I had picked up at a Seed sample sale for a cool $20.  It is a lovely combination of long beige and choc faux fur, but not yucky cheap looking faux fur, it was more of an ‘is that alpaca wool or isn’t it’ overall look.  Needless to say it was a winter staple, and I was glad to be pulling out of Wardrobe number 1.  Trawled the supermarket, about to head to the register when I dropped an apple in the fruit and veg department.  Looking down – I noticed something rather alarming.  What is that?  On my vest? A SINGE MARK!  Singe – is that how you spell it?  There was a ten cm diameter section in which all the lovely long fur had been completely singed off the front of the jacket.  The fur wasn’t gone completely, but it was definitely way shorter and the ends were all twisted and kind of stuck together in matted clumps.  Uh – how had I not noticed this before??  After making sure I wasn’t actually on fire, I tried to determine how this tragedy had occurred.   The last time the vest was worn was last year… CRAP.  After dejectedly showing the bf we puzzled over this strange phenomenon for some time.  Apart from a spontaneous vest combustion occurring within Wardrobe No. 1 (and I checked and no other clothing was damaged in the nearby vincinity) we deduced that it must be from either 1. our gas stove when I was cooking (never cooking in fur again), or 2. Sitting too close to the heater.  I do have a rather nasty habit of laying directly in front of our gas heater, as I require maximum warmth.  Bugger.  I tried wetting it, brushing it out and even cutting off the burnt bits.. but ALAS it is unfixable.

On the bright side – this has left a gap in the wardrobe room for a faux fur vest.  FAB.  SO – just could not decide between a dark grey Alice and Olivia oversized drapey faux fur version or a real (shhh)cream rabbit fur version by Sydney label Museum.  One can be worn with black, grey and more sombre wintry tones, and the other would look fab teamed with white, light denim and neutral boots.   In true form, I just bought both.  Here:

Love them.  Even if one is real… sorry bunnies (where do they find pure cream bunnies? Perhaps I shouldn’t ask that question… retract RETRACT!).

AND – both investment pieces for sure.

Today’s outfit.  So today I have tried something a little different from the usual blazer/shirt/skinny pants combo.  Today, I am channelling a nineties Spanish bullfighter. Check it:

Ole.
Today’s outfit includes the amazing Tibi black knitted bead detail cropped jacket ($20 Camberwell market.  TOTALLY AMAZING BARGAIN BUY.  Enough said), worn over a tucked in Sportsgirl white poly sleeveless shirt ($70 in store Sportsgirl.  These are the most versatile shirts for both summer and winter – lucky I have four in a rainbow of colours), and then for something completely different I have on a pair of Witchery tailored peg leg woollen pants ($45 Witchery DFO.  I actually feel very professional and ladylike in these pants – loving the length and no need to even roll the hem. FAB – shall add these to the *must wear* list), and then all finished off with the tan cutout Tony Bianco wedges.

Smart business casual anyone? ME.

Love it.
